I have a new client who has just signed up with me. She has been to several personal trainers in the past, and told me after a few months, she decides she’s got enough of a routine in place to be able to “go it alone”.
The problem though, she said, is that she soon goes back to “old ways”, and her diet goes ballistic while her training programme ceases to progress. Then she’s undone all the good work she achieved, and she may as well have thrown the money she spent on training into the bin with her empty KFC bucket.
My client has come to the conclusion that having a personal trainer keeps her disciplined and accountable. This time, she said, she’s in it for the long-term.
It got me thinking of this very important aspect of personal training - it’s not just having someone helping you to get fit by setting up the right programme for you, and showing you what to do, it’s also about having someone hold you to account.
A good trainer will not only aim to motivate and encourage you, but they will also kick your butt when it needs it (metaphorically, of course). As well, when you are paying good money for your sessions each week, it’s a pretty big incentive to turn up for them.
Certainly, it’s a bigger incentive than turning up to your gym - how many gym contracts out there are being paid on a monthly basis without the member ever likely to turn up to the again?
Yes, personal training costs more than a monthly gym membership, but it’s an investment in your health that you are far more likely to adhere to - for that very reason. Nor do you get personalised health advice from a gym membership, or a shoulder to offload on after a hard working day, while having your training session!
All in all, when it comes to starting a fitness journey, a personal trainer can not only get you on track, they can keep you on track. They can hold you accountable.
Of course, a good trainer should also be able to set you up in a way that you can go it alone should you feel that you have the discipline. But they can't make you into a disciplined person, you have to be able to do that for yourself. As the old adage goes, you can lead a horse to water, but you can't make them drink.
If you struggle to maintain discipline and hold yourself accountable when it comes to your health and fitness, then having a personal trainer help you do that is a true investment in your health.
