A good personal trainer will generally insist on clients attending for a minimum of two sessions per week during their training programme. The reason for this isn't simply to 'make more money' from their clients, as many would believe, but it's because anything less than this will not generally produce results, or certainly, progress will be extremely slow. And good trainers care about you getting results!
The reason it's hard to get results from one session per week is because the body very quickly loses adaptations from exercise unless the movement patterns and exertions are performed regularly.
In a very over-simplified explanation, when you exercise, you are basically causing some minor damage and stress to your body, whether that be in your muscles or cardiovascular system.
It is this minor stress - which your body then repairs and recovers from - that causes it to get stronger (and causes it to adapt to the stressors).
However, if you don't keep applying the stressors in a regular way, the body then weakens again, losing the adaptations – and seven days between sessions is enough to lose most, if not all, of the adaptations.
Unless you have trained on your own in the meantime (and most clients tend not to do this, since they are often coming to a PT to motivate them), anything that you gained in the last session will generally be lost.
You can achieve good results in two sessions per week as a beginner, but paying for just one weekly session, then doing nothing in between, is pretty much a waste of your money.
While I do sometimes consider clients training with me for one session a week, this is generally only once they have done a minimum of three months with me doing two sessions a week, and I am confident they will keep up with additional training in their own time.
Or, it might be when they are already committed to a training and fitness routine, and need a PT for extra help or some fine tuning.
Good personal trainers care about their clients. They also care about their reputation. If you are not achieving because you are only doing one session per week, the chances are you will blame the training, not the fact that you are not doing enough.
Hopefully, this helps to explain why good trainers much prefer you to commit to two sessions a week as a minimum. If you have any questions, please feel free to get in touch with me!
