Back at Work Programme

The cost of a bad back

Musculoskeletal problems are one of the leading causes of sickness absence in the UK, with back conditions accounting for a significant proportion of all work-related musculoskeletal disorder cases reported to the Health and Safety Executive.

As well as days lost to absenteeism, there's presenteeism to consider: employees who are in work, but operating at a fraction of their capacity. It’s difficult to be productive while managing pain at their desk, in their driving seat, or on the assembly line.

Where staff are spending hours sitting or in one position doing repetitive movements, being incapacitated by a ‘bad back’ is a very real risk - and yet, it's largely preventable.

Introducing Back at Work

Back at Work is a practical, evidence-based training programme that I can deliver directly to your staff, designed for anyone whose job keeps them seated or stood in one position for long periods.

It is also a programme that offers a real solution. Let’s not pretend that a few stretches at the desk are not going to fix your team’s back issues. I’ll give your staff take-home knowledge to apply in their lives to make a real difference to low back pain and back strength.

Who can benefit? Office teams, call centre staff, drivers, assembly line operators, and anyone who is seated for long periods in their work, or stood while doing repetitive movements.

My ‘Back at Work’ course is delivered as a half day session of 3 hours. It covers:

  • Why back pain occurs: how the back works, and what impact modern life, such as our working day, can affect our backs.

  • Practical working day solutions for back care: sustainable daily practices that can be applied at work, including posture movements to help maintain a neutral spine. This will include habit-building tactics to make sure what they learn on the day actually gets used.

  • Take-home programme: where the magic happens, a back strengthening programme for your staff that will improve their lives overall, as well as improve their working day. This will cover core stability, glute work and core engagement to protect the spine.

The session will close with a Q&A, and I will leave a one-page summary with your HR department that can be used to remind your workforce. You can also book refresher sessions for the same employees where we go over the exercises, to keep them motivated to continue.

Why work with me

I am a specialist qualified personal trainer and prescriptive exercise coach. I hold Level 3 and Level 4 qualifications in Personal Training, Exercise Referral and Low Back Pain Management through Exercise.

This means you won’t be getting generic ‘wellness’ content. It is a truly practical and actionable programme based on experience and instructing.

Sessions are tailored to your workforce - the demands of a desk-based team are different from the needs of a fleet of drivers. My programme will reflect that.

I've already been commissioned to deliver back care programmes for organisations, including a six-week course for Tameside Carers Centre.

The outcome

Less sickness absence from back pain. Fewer employees struggling in pain due to the niggles in their backs. Practical and usable knowledge that your team can both use at work as well as in their personal lives.
